worth mentioning

it is noteworthy that ford has been totally weaned off sedation/pain management. they started by weaning his ativan and once rid of that, slowly decreased his morphine infusion down to nothing as well. depending on the nurse, he sometimes get a dose of ativan to help with his "re-tapes", and depending on his liver function, occasional tylenol to ease his fevers. otherwise - nothing!

nothing! (for pain. his lasix and milrinone infuse on).

perhaps remarkable says it better than noteworthy. everyone marvels at his sedation-free good humour, considering he is intubated through one nostril, and has an NG stuffed down the other. not to mention all the other drawbacks of life in the CCU.

but he smiles more these days than he ever has! if he's happy here, imagine how pleased he'll be when he gets to the other side of this...

so we find moments of happiness too. unfortunately for us, unlike ford, we know what we're missing. so we also have many moments of heartbreak, alone here at night, miles away from him.

here is some recent cuddle time with momma:
with pops (and fluid retention):
in his millieu:
and in other cute baby news, we had a recent visit, and closet inspection, from Rudi:

  1. I am so glad to hear that he is smiling lots. He will definitely be thrilled once he is the other side of things.
As for you two, hang in there. I'm thinking about you & Ford lots, wishing you all the best.
    Virtual Hugs to you three,

  2. Children are so resilient! To Ford, the hospital, ICU and the tube down his nose are normal aspects of his daily life-- he knows nothing more and is simply happy as a baby would be happy to be with his parents and to have his every need met. It bothers you because you have experienced a different reality. Imagine how his world will expand once he receives a new heart and experiences life outside the hospital setting! My prayers are with all of you -- stay strong.

  3. Ford is so tall!!! Wow! And Mom looks very, very happy as well. And Dad? You are definitely being studied by your prodigy. Very intense note-taking on behalf of young Ford - trying to read his Dad's every facial expression... and mind? Thanks so much for the wonderful photos. Beautiful.

And Rudi....what a character - hope he did mistake the closet for the potty room? :)

  6. Rudi is honoured to have made the blog in such an official capacity: he wants to let everyone know that, upon his nearly-naked inspection, the closet was indeed lovely anhd well kept, if a bit underused. Also of note: if you put your fingers in the hings and close the door you'll squish them nicely. Ouch. : )
