the two times they've extubated ford, and when they try again in the future, they put him on "cpap", which looks like this:
the little yellow hat with strings keeps the 1" prongs in place in his nostrils. he hates the prongs.
here he is re-intubated and with one of his tent-hats to shield the light out of his face: getting to hold him again for the first time since his surgery:

Salvete, Ford, Christa, and Nick! (Sorry, but I don't know how to do italics in a comment box.Means "Hi, and be well!" It's in the imperative, so that's an order!?! "sal-WAY-tay!" Latin's not pretty, but it's very to-the-point.) One of your recent commenters was right about the "creepy" feeling one can get from just watching/listening to your blog. (Yeah, I "listen" to what I read all the time, being the queen of subvocalisers. It causes dry throat and seriously slows one down, but I still like it a lot better than speedreading.) So here I am, Ernestine the old-time telephone operator on "Laugh-In" finally piping up to admit that she's been bag-earing on the party line all along! I'm grateful for this blog, too--"just because," which is already reason enough, but also since it means I can be a little more current about the thoughts I'm thinking for and about you three and your circle of pros and family and close friends. As for the love, currency doesn't matter so much, I'm sure. All the "accoutrements" always stop me short for an instant when I first look at the photos, but they quickly become background to the person or people who are in them--or just behind or beside the camera, as the case may be--every one too beautiful for words. I'm really glad to know there's been enough of a lull that you can have some cuddle time again at long last. It must be so very hard to do without. Even though the "gear" is not the main feature, I'm pleased to see that Ford's ivs have little stabilising plates around them to help them stay put, thereby reducing the number of pokes and punctures he must endure. Also that the ones on his arms are located so that he has the option of hugging his arms to himself when he wants to. But the prongs-up-the-nose? Aagh!! No wonder he hates them: they must feel like a constant tease-to-sneeze! And he can hardly be expected to be philosophical enough to recognise them as a sign of progress. You, his parents, not so much either, when you have to endure the hardships along with Ford and can't really spare him any of them. "Fight" is good--vital, even--but so is the occasional bit of respite. From what you've been writing here so far, your "team" really understands that. Whew! I hope you're all having a particularly good day.
ReplyDeleteHi Christa, Nick and Ford!
ReplyDeleteI was so elated to see photos of Ford. Hmmh - I do not get a squeamish feeling seeing Ford's incisions - I just marvel at the ability to repair now. Absolutely marvelous! I find that Ford is such a beautiful, chubby, handsome baby - one's eye just zeros in on him. I bet you would both just love to hug him Christa & Nick! He just looks like a cuddler!
From the photos of you and Ford together - he must have to be placed very carefully on your lap Christa! Good thing he is sedated as you would both be tangled in the tubes etc. as I think once he is on his own - he is going to be a going concern - very strong willed of course - and he has had to be....as us Taurus' tend to be - whether we like it or not - just a "bull-characteristic!"...but we can be powerful - like Ford is being now. "Take the bull by the horns" attitude. He shall do well!
You 3 are always in our thoughts!
Big Hugs
